What is Osteoarthritis?

When a person ages the smooth cartilage at the end of bones becomes worn and rough.  As this cartilage degrades it leads to less protection of the bones and a decreased joint space.  This, in turn, leads to increased wear and tear and exacerbates the problem.  As the space between the bones decreases bony growths can occur (osteophytes), making the joint appear knobbly.  

All of this causes stiffness, reduced mobility, swelling and ultimately, pain.
